My Positive Day-Part 1

I discussed the idea of being more positive second quarter, both for myself and my students. I think so far we have done really great. I've been talking to a lot of students about goals for second quarter and they are so impressive. I've also been asking students to think of one positive thing happening in their lives each day. So many students automatically want to answer "nothing." I refuse to believe my students are going every day without anything positive happening in their lives. If that is the case, I need to ensure my students begin looking for positive things to brighten their days up.

So, my positive moment for today is the fact that NO students received Falcon Fouls! Students can receive Falcon Fouls for negative behavior, being unprepared for class, out of uniform, dead iPads, etc. Today, being the first day back after Thanksgiving break, I was sure someone would forget their ID or have a dead iPad. Nope! Everyone proved me wrong and I could not be happier! Every single one of my kiddos remembered their ID, charged their iPad, and came to school ready to get to work. It was the greatest first day back ever and I hope to see it again tomorrow and the rest of the week.

Another positive moment from today is witnessing a student drop his accordion in the hallway, papers flying everywhere, and immediately seeing several other students stop everything to help pick it up. The amount of support students give each other every day is one of my main reasons for coming to work every day. They are constantly lending a helping hand and encouraging each other to be better and do better. I could not be more proud to be a teacher to these wonderful, amazing students.

My third and final positive moment from today is having a student suggest a video for Wednesday's Quick Write. Every day, we do quick writes in class for 5 minutes. Every Wednesday, we watch a short video and then use our quick write to discuss the video. Twice now, I have had students put in requests for certain videos, and twice now I have been amazed at the videos chosen. I love when my students show enthusiasm and get involved in lesson planning. I want students to be in charge of their own learning and know that they have a say in the classroom. The first video chosen several weeks ago was In a Heartbeat. The second video chosen for this week was Farewell. Both videos chosen follow criteria used for previous videos, which shows me students are aware of appropriate videos and are seeking them out. These videos are both so heartwarming and hold so much meaning in such a short time. Both videos require students to think and analyze what the message is and what can be learned from the video. The fact that my students watched these videos and immediately saw a way to incorporate them into classroom lessons leaves me speechless. I could not be more impressed with them.

I am going to push for positivity every day and share these moments as often as possible. If anyone out there has positive encounters they've had or seen, I would love to hear about them!

With love,
Ms. Haury

2nd Quarter Goals

I've been meeting with all of my students to discuss goals for the second quarter and what we should be working toward the rest of the school year. Let me tell you, some of my students are so impressive! So impressive in fact, that I've been pushing myself to create some second quarter goals of my own. I've noticed some things that went really well first quarter and then some things that I would like to work on improving. So...Here goes! Have "book talks": I would love to give my students time to discuss the books they are reading with other students or the whole class. So many times, students come to me wanting to just sit and talk about what they're reading or reread certain lines with me because they were funny or interesting. I would love for them to have time to share things like that with the whole class. Encouraging students to share their books with others promotes a positive reading environment. It gives students ideas for new books to read ...

Second Quarter-Let's Focus on Being Positive

This time of year is always hard. It's officially November. It's getting colder, darker, and the school year is getting tougher. Students have now been in school long enough that it's no longer a new and fun experience for them. They're beginning to realize the workload is increasing as well as expectations. Students that slacked off at the beginning of the year are now feeling overwhelmed and overworked. At this point, they're received their first quarter grades and are beginning to understand the seriousness of the time and effort they put into their work. Our first quarter grades went out last week and already I'm seeing some behavior shifts. There are the students who persevere and see their grades as a chance to improve and push themselves to be better. There are students who have decided they are not where they expected to be and are giving up. Not only are kids dealing with school stress, the seasons are changing. When kids wake up in the morning, it...

SOL11...Starbucks

Starbucks      I opened the outside door and was immediately hit with a rush of warmth air. The air outside was warm, so I wasn't expecting it. I opened the second door, letting me into the building, and was overwhelmed by the smell of coffee in the air. I rarely drank coffee, but for some reason the smell was still enticing to me. It made me feel welcome and relaxed. I held the door open for Jr. to follow in behind me, and as he went to find us seats, I got in line. I could hear orders being yelled out, beans being crushed, mixers spinning. Bob Dylan was playing in the background. I smiled, feeling at rest.       I've never been the type that's able to get work done at home. I just feel way too distracted there. Since high school, I've either hid out in the library or a coffee shop of some sort. It was the only way I was able to get anything accomplished. Coming through these doors, the doors I've entered a million times, it felt like coming ho...
