Watching the Rain
I took a peek out the window before mentioning anything to Charlie. It was time for a walk, but I wasn't looking forward to it. I had heard it raining all morning and wasn't excited to experience it firsthand. Just as I thought, the rain was still pouring down. I parted the blinds a few more inches to glance left and right. The snow from last week was melting at least, but it was leaving behind large puddles all over the road. Large, muddy puddles. I watched for a few seconds as rain fell, splashing cars, sidewalks, and windows. It was unrelenting.
As I stared, a mom and son came out of the building across from me. The boy, maybe four years old, immediately ran for a puddle, taking large strides in hopes of making the biggest splash. I watched as mom reached out hoping to catch him before the jump, but already knowing she wouldn't reach him, her arm outstretched half-heartedly. From the window, I could see mom sigh and watch him jump in the puddles for a few seconds before pulling him away.
I sighed heavily, understanding the mom's plight, and looked toward Charlie. He wanted to go out. He was excited to go out.
"You just took a bath yesterday, you know." I stated sadly. He just wagged his tail harder and stared back.
I tried again, "You're going to get all muddy and have to take another one." Nothing. He didn't care. He knew it was time to go out and nothing was going to deter him.
"You know you don't like baths." His tail continued wagging.
I looked once more sadly out the window and took a deep breath. "Alright, let's go." I hadn't even finished my sentence before Charlie was all over me, barking, wagging his tail happily. I scowled and gave him the stink eye, but he wasn't phased.
I slowly walked toward the door and pulled down his leash. "I'm going to regret this, I just know it."

Great slice! Love the image of the mom halfheartedly restraining her son.
ReplyDeleteSuch a fun slice to read. No matter how many times I try to reason with my Golden Retriever about the weather, she doesn't seem to care. She is adamant that we go for our walk. I'm glad Stacy shared your slice with us. I really enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter's dog who we babysit loves to be anywhere where there is water or snow that he can drink the water and eat plenty of snow. We have to give him a very short leash when the weather is like that, otherwise he would be distracted.
