SOL10....Movie Night

     Movie Night

As I stood in the kitchen watching the glass microwave plate spin around, I contemplated what movies I might be interested in watching. It's finally Saturday night and I plan to spend it relaxing: being lazy in my big comfy slippers, bowl full of popcorn, and a movie. Several movies to be exact.
I heard the first pops of kernels exploding in their bag and took a peek in the microwave. The plate kept spinning round and round and I watched as the bag slowly grew larger and larger. I could already smell the popcorn smell taking over the kitchen.
As I breathed in the yummy popcorn smell, I went back to contemplating my movie options...was there anything on Netflix or Amazon recently? I haven't checked in a while, so I'm sure there was something there. I also had a pretty large collection of my own I never watched too. It had been a while since I watched a movie, I might have too many movies to choose from.
While the kernels continued popping away in the microwave, I walked over to the shelves to browse movie options. At first, I tried to decide what genre of movie I was interested in, but that didn't limit options at all. Aside from knowing I didn't want to watch a scary movie, which I didn't own many of to begin with, I didn't have many to cross off the list. Action? Sounds good! Comedy? Good! Romance? Sure! That method was not working.
I decided instead to just go shelf to shelf, checking titles that sounded interesting. As I ran my fingers across different titles, I pulled out one or two that might work. I made it halfway through the third shelf before I paused on a title: French Kiss. I haven't watched that in forever, and I love Kevin Kline in that movie. Immediately, my mind ran through memories of the movie and I decided this was the movie to watch tonight, or at least the one to start with.
As if on cue, knowing my movie choice was made, the microwave beeped, letting me know my popcorn was done. Yes! The smell of popcorn had taken over the living room as well and I was excited to dig in. Knowing my night was planned and ready to begin, my mind relaxed. All thoughts of work or chores left my head as I moved back toward the kitchen to grab my popcorn.
I yelled into the other room, "Charlie, you ready for a movie?"

  2. Hope you enjoyed your movies! Makes me think of kids choosing books--so much depends on the mood in the moment.

2nd Quarter Goals

I've been meeting with all of my students to discuss goals for the second quarter and what we should be working toward the rest of the school year. Let me tell you, some of my students are so impressive! So impressive in fact, that I've been pushing myself to create some second quarter goals of my own. I've noticed some things that went really well first quarter and then some things that I would like to work on improving. So...Here goes! Have "book talks": I would love to give my students time to discuss the books they are reading with other students or the whole class. So many times, students come to me wanting to just sit and talk about what they're reading or reread certain lines with me because they were funny or interesting. I would love for them to have time to share things like that with the whole class. Encouraging students to share their books with others promotes a positive reading environment. It gives students ideas for new books to read ...

Second Quarter-Let's Focus on Being Positive

This time of year is always hard. It's officially November. It's getting colder, darker, and the school year is getting tougher. Students have now been in school long enough that it's no longer a new and fun experience for them. They're beginning to realize the workload is increasing as well as expectations. Students that slacked off at the beginning of the year are now feeling overwhelmed and overworked. At this point, they're received their first quarter grades and are beginning to understand the seriousness of the time and effort they put into their work. Our first quarter grades went out last week and already I'm seeing some behavior shifts. There are the students who persevere and see their grades as a chance to improve and push themselves to be better. There are students who have decided they are not where they expected to be and are giving up. Not only are kids dealing with school stress, the seasons are changing. When kids wake up in the morning, it...

SOL11...Starbucks

Starbucks      I opened the outside door and was immediately hit with a rush of warmth air. The air outside was warm, so I wasn't expecting it. I opened the second door, letting me into the building, and was overwhelmed by the smell of coffee in the air. I rarely drank coffee, but for some reason the smell was still enticing to me. It made me feel welcome and relaxed. I held the door open for Jr. to follow in behind me, and as he went to find us seats, I got in line. I could hear orders being yelled out, beans being crushed, mixers spinning. Bob Dylan was playing in the background. I smiled, feeling at rest.       I've never been the type that's able to get work done at home. I just feel way too distracted there. Since high school, I've either hid out in the library or a coffee shop of some sort. It was the only way I was able to get anything accomplished. Coming through these doors, the doors I've entered a million times, it felt like coming ho...
