2019SOL10 Charlie's new cousin!

I pulled into a parking spot a heard my phone ding. I dug it out of my purse and looked at the screen. They were on their way. Wait...they were on their way, On their way! I hurriedly grabbed all my stuff in the front seat, huffing as my keys slipped through my fingers and fell to the floor, taking up an extra ten seconds of my time making me reach down to grab them. After grabbing all my stuff from the back seat in the same hurried fashion, I ran up the path to my apartment. They were on their way! My cousin was coming over and she was bringing her new PUPPY!
A few weeks ago, my cousin's dog Wilson, Charlie's best friend in the whole world, had to be put down. He was diagnosed with lymphoma three months ago and while we were all hoping he would make it to summer, it just got too hard for him. Wilson was a trooper and worked hard to make it to those three months, not to mention putting up with frequent visits from all his friends and family crying and fawning over him in his last few months. He was quite popular, so there was a lot of crying and fawning.
So, a few weeks has gone by, my cousin has decided she is ready and needing a new dog in her life. She needs a dog to go on walks with her every day, to keep her company, to feed, etc, so she started checking with shelters and seeing who was available. In comes Louie! Louie is an amazingly adorable tiny pit mix with what they're thinking is Dachshund. All of the paperwork finally went through and they were able to bring him home Monday, which means we were able to meet him today!
Charlie, as we know, is blind. So adjusting to Wilson being gone in such a short time was already hard. Now, my cousin who is associated with Wilson, is showing up with a new puppy. A new hyper, tiny puppy that is climbing and jumping and running circles around Charlie. Charlie just about had a heart attack. Louie wanted to run, run, run all around the apartment and sniff and play with all of Charlie's toys. It's a work in progress, but quite fun to watch....We watched as Charlie stood stiff as a rock listening for Louie running. Charlie can hear him somewhere in the apartment. You can see Charlie's ears perk slightly as he catches a noise somewhere. He hears Louie, but where is he? We all laugh as we see Louie sprint out of the kitchen. Charlie turns but he's too slow, Louie has dashed across the living room and landed full on top of Charlie.
The room erupts in laugher at this. Charlie looks completely baffled, speechless. He's not the tiniest dog in the room, but he usually plays with dogs bigger than him, so the advantage of wrestling and being the one to climb all over someone always goes to him. He's also used to softies that just roll over and let him win (he has a reputation to uphold of course). Louie is completely foreign to him. A dog smaller than him? Not letting him win? Who did you bring into my home?! What is happening here!? But, after a brief pause, he decided to give as good as he's getting and the wrestling commenced.
After a while, it was time for Louie to go home. I get to dog-sit him Saturday for a few hours, so this was a good trial run for then. When they were getting ready to leave, I asked Charlie where Louie went and he started whining, looking for him. So despite all the second guessing and death stares while Louie ran around stealing all his toys, I'd say today was a success!

2nd Quarter Goals

I've been meeting with all of my students to discuss goals for the second quarter and what we should be working toward the rest of the school year. Let me tell you, some of my students are so impressive! So impressive in fact, that I've been pushing myself to create some second quarter goals of my own. I've noticed some things that went really well first quarter and then some things that I would like to work on improving. So...Here goes! Have "book talks": I would love to give my students time to discuss the books they are reading with other students or the whole class. So many times, students come to me wanting to just sit and talk about what they're reading or reread certain lines with me because they were funny or interesting. I would love for them to have time to share things like that with the whole class. Encouraging students to share their books with others promotes a positive reading environment. It gives students ideas for new books to read ...

Second Quarter-Let's Focus on Being Positive

This time of year is always hard. It's officially November. It's getting colder, darker, and the school year is getting tougher. Students have now been in school long enough that it's no longer a new and fun experience for them. They're beginning to realize the workload is increasing as well as expectations. Students that slacked off at the beginning of the year are now feeling overwhelmed and overworked. At this point, they're received their first quarter grades and are beginning to understand the seriousness of the time and effort they put into their work. Our first quarter grades went out last week and already I'm seeing some behavior shifts. There are the students who persevere and see their grades as a chance to improve and push themselves to be better. There are students who have decided they are not where they expected to be and are giving up. Not only are kids dealing with school stress, the seasons are changing. When kids wake up in the morning, it...

SOL11...Starbucks

Starbucks      I opened the outside door and was immediately hit with a rush of warmth air. The air outside was warm, so I wasn't expecting it. I opened the second door, letting me into the building, and was overwhelmed by the smell of coffee in the air. I rarely drank coffee, but for some reason the smell was still enticing to me. It made me feel welcome and relaxed. I held the door open for Jr. to follow in behind me, and as he went to find us seats, I got in line. I could hear orders being yelled out, beans being crushed, mixers spinning. Bob Dylan was playing in the background. I smiled, feeling at rest.       I've never been the type that's able to get work done at home. I just feel way too distracted there. Since high school, I've either hid out in the library or a coffee shop of some sort. It was the only way I was able to get anything accomplished. Coming through these doors, the doors I've entered a million times, it felt like coming ho...
