As I was adding one last note to my email, I happened to glance up and catch sight of the clock. Oh no! It was already 5:55 and the show started at 6. I wanted to get a seat up close and I still needed time to see if there was a place to set up my iPad in the back to record the show. I took one last sip of coffee and grabbed my stuff to head out the door, checking one last time to make sure I had my I.D. in case I got locked out after the show. Yep, I'm good to go.
As I entered the MPR though, I immediately realized my mistake in coming so late. The place was packed! I was both proud that the talent show was full and sad that I wouldn't be up front or getting video set up. I could already see one of my students on stage ready to start, so I looked toward the back where several rows of available seats were still available and sat in one of them quickly.
The next hour and a half flew by in a blur. I watched one amazing performance after another. There were singers, dancers, musicians, and more. Just when I thought we were done, someone else would get on stage and blow me away! I was so impressed...not only by the talent I saw tonight, but by the pure guts of these kiddos. They know they're getting up there in front of family, friends, staff... It's scary. They make mistakes. Yet they stay up there! They keep going. They finish. There is nothing more amazing than that.
It wasn't even just the performers though, it was everyone there tonight. All the families that took time out of their night to come show support and were beaming with pride: videoing, taking pictures, bragging throughout the night. All the stage hands helping out in the background. Or I should say, stage hands AND performers. The amount of times I saw students running back and forth to perform then do lighting or fix a Mic for another student or hold sheet music, the list goes on forever. All of the performers not on stage, but still showing support. During several songs, the entire left side of the room would light up with cell phones being raised to follow along with whoever was performing. The amount of support these students showed for each other throughout the night was just simply beautiful.
I'm always a proud teacher, so saying I'm proud (again) may not mean much. BUT I AM! AGAIN! The whole talent show tonight, every single performance, every single moment, was beautiful.
I've been meeting with all of my students to discuss goals for the second quarter and what we should be working toward the rest of the school year. Let me tell you, some of my students are so impressive! So impressive in fact, that I've been pushing myself to create some second quarter goals of my own. I've noticed some things that went really well first quarter and then some things that I would like to work on improving. So...Here goes! Have "book talks": I would love to give my students time to discuss the books they are reading with other students or the whole class. So many times, students come to me wanting to just sit and talk about what they're reading or reread certain lines with me because they were funny or interesting. I would love for them to have time to share things like that with the whole class. Encouraging students to share their books with others promotes a positive reading environment. It gives students ideas for new books to read ...
