2019 SOL13 More Puppy Time :)

I've explained how cute my cousin's new puppy Louie is right? Because he is super, duper, uber cute. And I was about to spend even more time with him today puppy-sitting while she went to a baby shower! (Cue all the squealing now) So, last time Charlie and Louie met it went...okay. It was their first meeting, so that is important to remember. Charlie is an old man, Louie is a puppy. Charlie is used to big dogs that are very easy going and just let him win all the wrestling matches, plus he's to being the small dog that can climb all over everyone. Now, Louie is the small dog that climbs all over everyone and DOES NOT let Charlie win wrestling matches. Plus, Charlie is blind and Louie just runs circles around him popping up out of nowhere like a ninja; Charlie isn't a fan of Guerrilla Warfare. Sooo their first meeting was a little rough. Understandable.
We had a chance today though for some serious bonding! Louie was getting dropped off at 11 and he would be there ALL afternoon! That was time for them to wrestle, tire each other out, take naps, go for walks, wrestle again...that's what dogs needed to bond. I was excited. So, in walks Louie and immediately runs over to Charlie, and Charlie turns and like a real tough guy, starts growling at him. Well, we're off to a good start, I think.
However, after letting them wrestle and play and tire themselves out some more, while giving them breaks and reminding them to "play nice," the plan finally worked! Both boys finally calmed down and started snoozing in the corner. While they were snoozing, I picked up my book and started browsing to find the page I'd left off on earlier that morning (I'd sadly lost my bookmark at the car dealership that morning when they startled me. I'd dropped my book, allowing my bookmark to fall out without me realizing it.)
I heard a noise from the corner of the room and watched as Charlie got up to get a drink of water. Louie immediately followed. I then watched as Charlie walked over and sniffed one of his toys. Louie immediately followed. Charlie, not realizing Louie was following turned around and bumped into him. I smiled. Charlie turned the opposite way and walked to the side door looking out the window (I know blind, but hey, old habits). Louie followed. I watched a few minutes longer as an interesting thing happened. Louie followed Charlie EVERYWHERE he went and did EVERYTHING he did. And Charlie, not comprehending that Louie was doing this, continued to turn around and bump into him. Finally, like a grumpy old man, he just laid back down. His face looked fully disgusted, I couldn't help but laugh out loud.

2nd Quarter Goals

I've been meeting with all of my students to discuss goals for the second quarter and what we should be working toward the rest of the school year. Let me tell you, some of my students are so impressive! So impressive in fact, that I've been pushing myself to create some second quarter goals of my own. I've noticed some things that went really well first quarter and then some things that I would like to work on improving. So...Here goes! Have "book talks": I would love to give my students time to discuss the books they are reading with other students or the whole class. So many times, students come to me wanting to just sit and talk about what they're reading or reread certain lines with me because they were funny or interesting. I would love for them to have time to share things like that with the whole class. Encouraging students to share their books with others promotes a positive reading environment. It gives students ideas for new books to read ...

Second Quarter-Let's Focus on Being Positive

This time of year is always hard. It's officially November. It's getting colder, darker, and the school year is getting tougher. Students have now been in school long enough that it's no longer a new and fun experience for them. They're beginning to realize the workload is increasing as well as expectations. Students that slacked off at the beginning of the year are now feeling overwhelmed and overworked. At this point, they're received their first quarter grades and are beginning to understand the seriousness of the time and effort they put into their work. Our first quarter grades went out last week and already I'm seeing some behavior shifts. There are the students who persevere and see their grades as a chance to improve and push themselves to be better. There are students who have decided they are not where they expected to be and are giving up. Not only are kids dealing with school stress, the seasons are changing. When kids wake up in the morning, it...

SOL11...Starbucks

Starbucks      I opened the outside door and was immediately hit with a rush of warmth air. The air outside was warm, so I wasn't expecting it. I opened the second door, letting me into the building, and was overwhelmed by the smell of coffee in the air. I rarely drank coffee, but for some reason the smell was still enticing to me. It made me feel welcome and relaxed. I held the door open for Jr. to follow in behind me, and as he went to find us seats, I got in line. I could hear orders being yelled out, beans being crushed, mixers spinning. Bob Dylan was playing in the background. I smiled, feeling at rest.       I've never been the type that's able to get work done at home. I just feel way too distracted there. Since high school, I've either hid out in the library or a coffee shop of some sort. It was the only way I was able to get anything accomplished. Coming through these doors, the doors I've entered a million times, it felt like coming ho...
