Motivational Monday 10/7

Alllllright, second Motivational Monday is in the works! I know I wasn't so great about getting my new word for last week up on time, so I'm thinking I know what my new goal for this week is going to be (hint hint).

First up though, our motivational quote!

I've seen this quote pop up a time or two and I always liked it. It's stuck with me, which is always a good sign. I think this quote is really powerful because a lot of people put themselves down for not achieving "great things." Myself included. We look at other people our age who are famous or have tons of money or are even just more popular on social media (the new famous-insert eye roll strong enough to cause whiplash) and think we haven't succeeded because that isn't us. We all aren't meant for that life though, and I think that's a good thing. Some of us are meant to do small, every day amazing things. Those every day little things make a difference, and we need to recognize the significance of that as well. Cheering up a child, coaching little league, cooking dinner for yourself or your family, giving belly rubs to dogs, those are small things that make a huge difference that should be recognized.
I'm recognizing that I'm a teacher, that I love being a teacher. And while I might not get all the fame and glory that other people have doing different jobs, while my kids might grow up and not even remember their 6th grade ELA teacher's name, I'm going to know that today I made a kid smile or interested them in a book or a million other small things. Being a teacher matters to me. Do small things in a great way. I can do that.

So here is what motivated me this Monday to keep going:
  • I'm posting on time! Woohoo! (I know it's only my second week doing this and that's not something I should be cheering about, but I've got serious craziness going on and remembering to blog every week is way down at the bottom of my list, so I'm proud I'm doing it. Be proud with me!)
  • A few of my yearbook kiddos and I went to the boys soccer match today, (they didn't win, but boy do they have some skills!) and we got some great photos! Not to mention I have THREE official yearbook photos lined up this week. Can I get another woohoo?!?
  • I FINALLY finished linking and sharing all three blocks of my classes blogs, so you can now browse my students' blogs as well! We haven't blogged much yet, but they've got some great ideas and will get some blogging time soon, so stay tuned.
Here is a goal this week I'm going to work on:
  • Work on some independent reading of my own...Sadly, I am still on page 50 of my book, so I did not work on this goal, but I'm keeping it for this goal because it's something I should be going every day anyway!
  • I'm also adding another one, as I hinted above :) This one I should definitely meet though. My second goal for this week is to complete my Word Wednesday blog post ON Wednesday. Whew! Please succeed!

2nd Quarter Goals

I've been meeting with all of my students to discuss goals for the second quarter and what we should be working toward the rest of the school year. Let me tell you, some of my students are so impressive! So impressive in fact, that I've been pushing myself to create some second quarter goals of my own. I've noticed some things that went really well first quarter and then some things that I would like to work on improving. So...Here goes! Have "book talks": I would love to give my students time to discuss the books they are reading with other students or the whole class. So many times, students come to me wanting to just sit and talk about what they're reading or reread certain lines with me because they were funny or interesting. I would love for them to have time to share things like that with the whole class. Encouraging students to share their books with others promotes a positive reading environment. It gives students ideas for new books to read ...

Second Quarter-Let's Focus on Being Positive

This time of year is always hard. It's officially November. It's getting colder, darker, and the school year is getting tougher. Students have now been in school long enough that it's no longer a new and fun experience for them. They're beginning to realize the workload is increasing as well as expectations. Students that slacked off at the beginning of the year are now feeling overwhelmed and overworked. At this point, they're received their first quarter grades and are beginning to understand the seriousness of the time and effort they put into their work. Our first quarter grades went out last week and already I'm seeing some behavior shifts. There are the students who persevere and see their grades as a chance to improve and push themselves to be better. There are students who have decided they are not where they expected to be and are giving up. Not only are kids dealing with school stress, the seasons are changing. When kids wake up in the morning, it...

SOL11...Starbucks

Starbucks      I opened the outside door and was immediately hit with a rush of warmth air. The air outside was warm, so I wasn't expecting it. I opened the second door, letting me into the building, and was overwhelmed by the smell of coffee in the air. I rarely drank coffee, but for some reason the smell was still enticing to me. It made me feel welcome and relaxed. I held the door open for Jr. to follow in behind me, and as he went to find us seats, I got in line. I could hear orders being yelled out, beans being crushed, mixers spinning. Bob Dylan was playing in the background. I smiled, feeling at rest.       I've never been the type that's able to get work done at home. I just feel way too distracted there. Since high school, I've either hid out in the library or a coffee shop of some sort. It was the only way I was able to get anything accomplished. Coming through these doors, the doors I've entered a million times, it felt like coming ho...
